An improved experience to fix the issues with remote collaboration.
At the beginning of 2022, we decided to work towards solving problems with remote work software. We wanted Filo to be a tool for productivity and organized communication within and between teams.
The biggest change we implemented was in the left navigation. I decided to strip away "floors" - a system that Filo had started with - and just use rooms. This would make it easier to track where conversations are happening, and where work is being tracked. With this change, users can only go one level deep in their Filo spaces, rather than multiple levels.
I also wanted to improve our messaging experience. In Filo, direct messages were localized to the campus, not global. The experience with DMs as a whole was not very efficient and often confusing for our users. I designed a new DM experience for both desktop and mobile within the campus and created an "inbox" for the homepage.
Updates were another big change we implemented. We had an announcements feature that was basic, but I wanted to design a feature that allowed for conversation and team updates.
With updates, users can post an update to a room, or a greater campus. They can be seen in a compact view in the right panel, but can also be viewed in a full screen modal with comments and conversations happening within individual updates.
